Cisco Live’s Walk-in Self-Paced (WISP) Labs provide attendees with a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience on a variety of products and solutions from Cisco. Cap off an unforgettable week at Cisco Live with the keynote address by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of the Emmy-nominated show Mythbusters. Adam and Jamie have made a career of putting conventional wisdom to the test and overturning the “the way we’ve always done it” mindset in a creative way. They’ve also logged an impressive list of honors and accolades along the way, including being inducted as Honorary Lifetime Members of the California Science Teachers Association, receiving the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism from the Harvard Secular Society, and being invited to participate in President Obama’s STEM initiative.

Adam Savage was born in New York City in the summer of 1967. The child of a psychotherapist and a filmmaker/painter, raised north of the city in Sleepy Hollow, he showed an early penchant for science classes, art classes, the drama club, and elaborate school pranks–though not necessarily attended to in that order. His young adult years took him back in New York City, working variously as a projectionist, photo developer, graphic designer, assistant animator, set designer, gallery owner, actor, sculptor, and prop-maker.

In the summer of 1990, he turned west to San Francisco and fell into its thriving theater scene, working for dozens of companies as a set designer, prop maker, art director, scenic painter, rigger, master carpenter and producer. In Northern California’s hub of the machine art community Adam’s skill arsenal grew — he welded, fooled with pneumatics, hydraulics, electronics, and picked up some rudimentary machining techniques at Amorphic Robot Works, building robotic animals, music-playing robots, climbing robots — even a robotic opera.

During these years he was also sculpting and exhibiting his sculpture in 50-plus solo and group shows around the country. This quirky mix of artistic, theater-design and mechanical skills left Adam with a reputation for solving difficult mechanical set problems for theaters. And that eventually caught the eye of the special effects industry. Starting in commercials, he built and rigged props and set pieces for over 150 commercials, with clients as diverse as Sega, Coca-Cola, Nike, Burger King and Chevrolet. He built the props for and art-directed a Coca-Cola commercial which was then nominated for a Clio award.

He left special effects for 18 months to head R&D for a small startup toy company, ZOOB–creators of ZOOB, the building toy. There he oversaw product development, merchandising and package design, as well as trade-show design and implementation. From the toy world he moved again toward special effects — this time to George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic, where we worked on Star Wars, Episodes 1 and 2, Galaxy Quest, Space Cowboys, A.I., Terminator 3, The Mummy, and over a dozen commercials. Between stints at ILM he worked in the prop department for Disney on Bicentennial Man, and as a model-shop supervisor on the two Matrix sequels. During this time he also taught Advanced Modelmaking and Problem Solving for five semesters at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.

In the spring of 2002, his old boss Jamie Hyneman called Adam to ask if he’d like to participate in a demo reel for a TV pilot — a new show for the Discovery Channel called Mythbusters. The show aired in January of 2003 with Adam and Jamie as its hosts. It was picked up by Discovery three weeks later. Eight years later, it remains one of the network’s highest rated shows. Mythbusters’ 160-and-counting episode hours have tackled over 750 myths and performed nearly 2,500 experiments. Adam and Jamie travel the country to corporate events, museums, and colleges, for groups as small as 20 and as large as 20,000, telling tales of experiments, explosions and hijinks.

Adam has multiple hobbies and is passionate about restoring his vintage four-wheel drive vehicle, and researching and accruing new pieces for his movie prop collection. But his true love is his family. He lives with his wife, twin boys, and their two amazing dogs.

Jamie Hyneman

Raised in Indiana farm country, Jamie’s father ran an apple orchard and his mother was a librarian. Other than being a prolific reader and having a penchant for creative ways of avoiding chores around the farm, Jamie showed no hint of what was to come.

After Jamie hitchhiked around the country for a number of months by himself at the age of 14, his parents insisted that if he was going to be that adventurous they wanted him to have some formal survival training, which he went through in the wilderness in Wyoming. Jamie acquired a taste for disappearing into the wilderness for weeks at a time, which he did periodically for decades after.

Graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Russian, and having worked as a cook on a cattle farm, as a pet-store owner, a building inspector, and a Slavic collection librarian at the United Nations in Geneva, Jamie decided to go to the Caribbean and work on a charter sailboat. Six months later he owned his own boat, obtained his captain’s license and dive masters rating, and was running his own diving and sailing charter business. Four years of captaining in the islands proved to be a great teacher, but also eventually became a routine.

Jamie sailed back up to the states, regrouped and thought carefully about what he wanted to do. He decided to try his hand at special effects. The diversity of the work and the creativity required intrigued him, so he methodically went about acquiring the required skills, starting as a simple shop assistant. Within 2 years in the New York City area, Jamie had worked on several feature films and dozens of commercials, several of which he supervised. At this point he decided he needed to make the next leap and moved to the San Francisco bay area in California to get on the crew of some effects intensive major feature films.

Over the years he worked on Robocop, Arachnophobia, Naked Lunch, and numerous other films until he was hired to manage the Colossal Pictures model shop in San Francisco. After several years of involvement with Colossal, Jamie was offered the opportunity to take over the model shop when Colossal was forced to downsize during the dot com bust. This is how M5 Industries was born. Jamie evolved M5 into a successful versatile effects business that has specialized in problematic custom builds for over 15 years.

Through the course of his 25 years of work in the effects industry, Jamie has had his hand in producing effects for over 800 commercials, dozens of feature films, and hundreds of prototypes.

Although Mythbusters occupies the majority of M5′s focus today, Jamie manages to keep a steady flow of R&D projects running in the background.

Jamie has been awarded an honorary engineering degree from the University of Maine, and an honorary doctorate of engineering from Villanova University, where he gave the commencement speech to the Class of 2010. He and Villanova’s College of Engineering have an ongoing collaborative relationship to develop new safety concepts for the military.

The holder of several patents and the winner of numerous industry awards, Jamie is also a long-standing member of the Screen Actor’s Guild.

Before joining Cisco, Surya served as President and CEO of Polaris Networks, a provider of optical transport switches. He also held the CEO position for Convergent Networks Inc., a provider of broadband voice infrastructure products for cable and telecom service providers. Surya also served as Chairman, President and CEO of Avici Systems Inc., where he successfully managed the company’s growth and transition from a private to a public company.

Previously, Surya was Vice President and General Manager of the local area network infrastructure business unit at USRobotics. Earlier in his career he worked for Intel Corporation, Ungermann-Bass and Telco Systems.

Surya has served on the boards of enKoo, a developer of remote access products, now a part of SonicWALL; Internet Photonics, a company acquired by Ciena Corporation in 2004; and Avici Systems.

Surya earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
