WHY IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO RETHINK THE ROLE OF IT MANAGEMENT – JULIE CANEPA, HEAD OF IT, CISCO AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the discipline of IT Management is focused mostly on the management of technology solutions. Many people would hold this view. But like all managerial roles the remit is larger than the title implies.
At Cisco Live Las Vegas, approximately 950 IT Managers were asked to state the number 1 barrier that they faced when trying to drive their organisation forward. The results were overwhelming; Culture and People. More than selecting the correct supplier, partner, vendor; more than evolving legacy systems; more than budgets. Managing the people both inside the IT team and the end users within the wider business is the key to unlocking the power that digital transformation provides.
The challenge comes from the constant and consistent progress in the field of IT. In many cases technology is progressing faster than behavioural change. Recent research has shown that the vast majority of digital offerings are classed as failures or are terminated not because of the quality of the solution, but because of a failure within the organisation to adapt to the change. While a potential benefit may be great, any solution needs to justify its expense vs. the actual measurable impact it is having on the business. So who’s role is it to shape the thinking of the people that implement and use our solutions? Yours.
The IT department must now transform our view from looking at IT outcomes, to looking for business outcomes. The collaboration between the line of business teams and our IT staff is crucial to the success of any project. IT has so much expertise in systems and process design that can be an asset to other departmental teams. We also have the ability to open up pathways to growth that departments may not have known were possible. It’s the transfer of knowledge that transforms possibility to opportunity. As an IT manager, cultivating a culture amongst your staff and the staff in the wider business that thrives on this approach is where our focus needs to be.
Manage the people, evolve the culture and IT will make a greater impact.
At Cisco Live, our IT Management program focuses on this skillset amongst the other technical aspects of the IT world. Our Program is designed by IT managers, for IT managers. Take the time for yourself and take your career a step forward by registering now.
WHY IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO RETHINK THE ROLE OF YOUR NETWORK - ROBERT DE NICOLO, DIRECTOR, ENTERPRISE NETWORKS, CISCO, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
Why it’s time for you to rethink the role of your network.
By 2020 there will be 26.3 Billion networked devices carrying 2.3 zettabytes of data each year across international networks. Volumes during the busiest times of the day are growing faster than average traffic. Smartphone traffic will exceed PC traffic. Wireless devices will be two thirds of the overall traffic.
Through all of that, Business IP Traffic – both fixed and mobile – will grow faster than IP WAN traffic overall.
The trends suggest that processing, providing and moving data is going to be one of the largest constraints businesses have in the near future. It’s scary to think that some experts argue the network is being commoditised. The backbone of your quest to digitise your business is always going to be your existing network. And let’s be clear, digitising your business is not just the buzz word of 2016/17, it’s a necessity to keep pace with the market and the expectations of the customers you serve.
Now stop and take a moment to think how you’re going to achieve this. What’s the first step? What’s the overall goal? What does success look like? No doubt it will all come down to doing more with less. The IT team is going to be asked how they can help management learn more about customers and the workforce that serves it. They’ll be asked to become more agile so they can innovate faster and keep up with new business demands. They’ll be asked to provide a new avenue for competitive advantage. They’ll be asked to do all of this while – let’s say it together now – mitigating risk and reducing cost.
The never ending quest of IT. Spend less, avoid risk, deliver more.
The answer is through software defined networking (SDN). SDN is becoming real. We are making it real. Where others are promising, we are delivering; delivering increased simplicity and automation; delivering improvements in useful and actionable analytics; delivering threat centric security all the way to the edge of the network. And, we can prove it. Where many businesses have explored SDN without tangible benefits, our partners and customers are starting to see results and are willing to share their stories. To hear about them, you need to come to Cisco Live Melbourne 2017, where we’ll unpack more about our promise to deliver Simplicity, Security and Analytics through your existing network. Our answer is the Cisco Digital Network Architecture.
Your network should be the cornerstone of your digital strategy. Unlock its full potential through DNA. Come and learn how at Cisco Live.
