JOSH MURRAY

Friday 6 March, 12:00pm - 1:15pm

At age 9 with 40 hens, Josh Murray started his own free range egg business, Josh’s Rainbow Eggs. Ten years later Josh’s 18,000 hens lay eggs that are sold in over 50 Coles and Woolworths stores in Victoria.

During this time he has helped develop one of the most environmentally sustainability models of egg farming, using state-of-the-art solar powered mobile sheds. Giving eggs to those in need is an inherent part of his business, with 4% of total production being donated each week to regional food charities.

He has given talks to thousands of school children about his egg business and is about to launch an on farm education centre that will allow children to see first-hand a truly environmentally sustainable farm. He is an incredibly engaging story teller who has the unique ability to inspire a whole generation of young people. This past year he has received seven awards, including Victorian Young Achievers Award for Environmental Sustainability; Australian Small Business Champions for Agriculture and Finalist Australian Farmer of the Year

ANGELINA ARORA

Friday 6 March, 12:00pm - 1:15pm

After learning of the detrimental impact that plastic bags and packaging have on the environment, Angelina Arora committed herself to finding a better solution to single-use plastics. To prevent the impact of the wastage of 1.2 trillion tonnes of plastic each year, Angelina went on to develop a new toxin-free plastic made completely out of waste products such as discarded crustacean shells when she was 15 years of age. She found that her creation decomposed 1.5 million times faster than conventional plastics, breaking down completely within 33 days on average. She now continues to develop this plastic for medical applications, investigates algae’s use in the remediation of oil spills and conducts cancer research. All of this at just 17 years old.

Angelina has been honoured with numerous titles and awards for her innovative research such as Young Scientist of the Year, Young Conservationist of the Year, BHP Billiton and CSIRO’s Innovator to Market, The Barbara Hackett Medal for Inspiration, a Green Globe and 7NEWS Young Achiever of the Year Award as well as multiple scholarships to international universities. She was also the Australian Delegate at the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair where she received the fourth grand award against 1800 competitors from over 81 countries.

Using her profile and voice, Angelina now empowers young women to follow their passions, especially in male-dominated industries such as STEM industries. She believes her generation is the one that will make a difference and discourages silence in the face of injustice amongst young people.
